Our history
AM Executive’s founder, Andrew McDowell, commenced his career as a research scientist in the field of evolutionary ecology and held roles as a tutor and lecturer at the University of Queensland. In 2002 he transitioned to a career with the Commonwealth Government, where he spent 17 years as part of the national security community, mostly in the field of counter terrorism. He has extensive leadership experience, having held senior positions in the Attorney-General’s portfolio from 2007 until 2019, where he led agency responses to numerous national security incidents in New South Wales and Victoria. Andrew also designed and delivered leadership and operational training courses for internal and external customers, including domestic and international government agencies.
In 2017 Andrew completed a Master of Business Administration at the Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) at Macquarie University in Sydney. He focused his studies on leadership behaviours including negotiation, persuasion, motivation and executive coaching. In 2022 Andrew completed a Master of Terrorism and Security Studies at Charles Sturt University’s Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security, where he was awarded a Postgraduate University Medal for outstanding academic performance. Andrew also holds a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, and a Postgraduate Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Ecology from the University of Queensland, Brisbane. He is also a Director of Praxis Advisory Pty Ltd, a consulting firm specialising in counter terrorism and preventing/countering violent extremism related services.
